Dental Exams
Can you remember the last time you came to see us? Think hard…was it in the past year? Alternatively, has it been a little bit longer? While we strongly recommend that all of our patients schedule a routine checkup and a cleaning with us every six months, the American Dental Association® (ADA) reports that less than 60 percent of you made it in for your appointment in the past year.
The interesting thing, though, is that an incredible 85 percent of you believe that your oral health is important. We must admit, we agree with you! Regular dental exams with us here at Sharokina Eshaghi, DMD can not only help keep your mouth healthy and disease-free, but it can also greatly improve both your confidence and your smile.
What Happens During a Dental Exam?
If it has been a long time since your last dental exam, it is understandable that you may be a little bit uncertain about what may occur during your exam. While many people may have trepidation about getting a dental exam, the fact is, regular checkups can prevent you from discomfort and pain in the future. If there are any issues in your mouth, we can catch them early during your exam and greatly improve your outcome.
The first thing we will do during your dental exam is to sit down and talk with you. If you have any complaints of pain or areas of concern, we can look for them during your examination and address them promptly. We will take your medical history, too, so we can understand your health better. If it has been longer than two years since your last dental exam, then we may begin by recommending dental X-rays. This will allow us to know if there are any issues with your jaw, bite, alignment, teeth, and jawbone.
Before we begin, we will examine your mouth and jaw and throat. We will both visually inspect it and manually examine it. We will look for anything that may indicate that you may have a problem in your mouth, such as swelling, pain, or lesions. We will assess you for problems like TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder and even oral cancer. After the initial examination, we will then clean your teeth thoroughly.
We will scale your teeth, which means that we will remove any hardened calculus from them. We will also floss your teeth for you. Sometimes our patients do notice bleeding during this part of the exam, which means you do need to floss and brush better at home. We will also use a gritty toothpaste to polish your teeth afterward, and if you are a good candidate for dental sealants or other treatments, we will discuss them with you at this point. Finally, we may offer you a fluoride rinse to help keep your teeth healthy and strong.
After your dental exam, we will follow up with any areas of concern that we may have observed during your appointment. If we noticed you have gum disease or tooth decay, we would recommend a treatment regimen for them. If there were no issues, then we will recommend that you come back in six months for another checkup and cleaning.
